چکیده

Defensive mechanisms in blister beetles (Coleoptera: Meloidae) include a wide variety of behavioral responses, chemical defense, and conspicuous external colorations. Although some these have been previously described, proctodeal extrusion, defensive behavior involving the extrusion inner abdominal membranes from region which appear intensely red or orange colored when hemolymph is seen through them, has not reported to date. Here, we tested ability display response threat stimuli wild populations three beetle species inhabiting Central Spain: Berberomeloe majalis (Linnaeus, 1758), comunero Sánchez-Vialas, García-París, Ruiz & Recuero, 2020, Physomeloe corallifer (Germar, 1818). In addition, observed recorded various other behaviors such as immobility, antennal display, autohemorrhage (reflex bleeding), defecation, thanatosis (death feigning). The frequency at was differed among species, did stress intensity needed for probability particular threatening stimulus. Our findings indicate that, although might be widespread potential mechanism Meloidae, elicit it generalized across lineages. are endemic semi-arid Mediterranean region, adapted climate would developed strategies that limit hydric mirrors effect but without fluid loss.

Embryonic and postembryonic development of blister beetles (Coleoptera: Meloidae) in the world: A synopsis

Blister (oil) beetles, family Meloidae, are distributed throughout the world except for New Zealand, Antarctica and most Polynesian islands. They are characterized by their complex biology including hypermetamorphosis and diapause. The present review discusses the embryonic development of several meloid species belonging to various genera. Concerning the postembryonic development, this work rev...

Agronomic and biodiversity impacts of the blister beetles (Coleoptera: Meloidae) in the world: A review

Blister beetles (Meloidae) are cosmopolitan in distribution except from New Zealand, Antarctica and most Polynesian islands. The present work reviews the most important agronomic impacts of various beetle species in different African, Asian, European and American countrie...

Pharmacological properties of blister beetles (Coleoptera: Meloidae) promoted their integration into the cultural heritage of native rural Spain as inferred by vernacular names diversity, traditions, and mitochondrial DNA.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Beetles of the family Meloidae (blister beetles) are often reported in pharmacological literature because of their content of cantharidin. Cantharidin has a long history in human medicine and was commonly applied in the 19th and the early 20th centuries, although its use has been progressively abandoned since then. Contrary to most, even common, large species of C...

The Meloidae (coleoptera) of Wisconsin.

There are recent faunistic surveys of selected insect taxa (e.g. Mutillidae, Scarabaeoidea, and Tenebrionidae) in Wisconsin but a formal investigation of the Meloidae (blister beetles) is lacking. The blister beetle fauna of several states has been published, but this study represents the first in the Midwestern United States. We provide a comprehensive list of all meloid species documented fro...
